London’s Community Kitchen Academy (LCKA)

LCKA provides students with Higher National Diplomas (HND) in Business and Hospitality Management in partnership with Strode College, as well as professional courses in Cookery and Digital Skills.  LCKA courses provide students with a flexible pathway to the final year of a university degree. They also help students build the confidence they for gainful employment, job promotion or to start their own enterprises.  The LCKA ethos is zero self-doubt, zero hardship.

The Role

The HND Academic Coordinator provides ongoing administrative support to the Programme Leader and Academic Department, and assists students and lecturers with the smooth running of all academic processes.  The HND Academic Coordinator works closely with colleagues to continuously enhance the efficiency and quality of academic delivery of the HND in Hospitality Management and Business.

The role requires effective communication with staff, students, Pearson awarding body and our Strode College partners, as well as other internal and external stakeholders.  You will need to support the Programme Leader with planning and administration of the programme, and academic staff with the effective delivery or teaching, learning and assessments. You will proactively ensure the provision of an efficient and professional service to students and academic staff, responding to a range of day-to-day enquiries and queries.  You will attend regular meetings, events and staff training sessions.

Main duties

  • Monitoring and reporting on attendance and engagement for all HND students
  • Regularly contacting HND students with encouragement and warnings about their attendance, engagement, and assignment submissions as and when required
  • Reporting regularly to the HND Programme Leader on attendance, engagement, and assignment submissions of HND students.
  • Liaising with tutors and students on a daily basis
  • Preparation and liaison on student reports & transcripts
  • Receipt and management of assignments
  • Follow up on late submission/ resubmission of assignments
  • Liaising with Internal Verifiers on assignment briefs and marked assignments, e.g. checking, and signing off and ensuring that submissions are marked to agreed deadlines.
  • Certification: checking evidence that all documentation is in place before claiming certificate on Edexcel online
  • Tracking student records, achievements, late submissions, resubmissions, and retakes using a variety of programmes/ databases/ portals
  • Ensuring the smooth day-to-day running of the programmes throughout the academic year including answering emails, speaking with students, and being the “logistical expert” for all details of their programme(s).
  • Delivering clear and engaging communications to students using the College’s bespoke Learning Environment.
  • Responsibility for preparing, organising and populating programme pages on the systems with up-to-date materials and information, ensuring accuracy, clarity and consistency in content.
  • Assisting with the set up and management of online timetables for the programme(s).
  • Maintaining up-to-date student records and email lists, to ensure that all students are registered properly and to resolve problems as quickly as possible.

Additional Duties (as and when required)

  • Additional administrative support to the Programme Leader as required
  • Attending meetings and minuting as required
  • General college tasks as required, e.g. helping prepare for meetings, purchasing items
  • Liaising with the admissions and compliance team for data management as and when required
  • Maintaining staff files
  • Answering incoming calls and assuming other receptionist duties when needed
  • Managing workflow by assigning tasks to other administrative employees daily, ensuring that deadlines are met, and work is completed correctly
  • Assisting in training staff members and new hires
  • Implementing and monitoring programmes as directed by management, and see the programmes through to completion
  • A point of contact for students for one or more programme(s) and to facilitate contact between staff and students.
  • Provide advice to students on routine matters and help them ‘settle-in’.
  • Responsible for resolving students’ problems and queries independently as they arise throughout the year, referring issues to relevant staff when necessary.
  • Assisting with the organisation and running of inductions.

Essential Criteria

  • Level 3 Qualifications e.g., A’ levels
  • Very good written and oral communication skills
  • Good word processing and Edexcel spreadsheet skills
  • Comfortable using information management databases and portals such a Moodle.
  • Available and willing to work weekends
  • An active and ethical person
  • Good organisational abilities
  • Good time management
  • Good interpersonal skills
  • Good team-working capabilities.

Preferable Criteria

  • BA (Hons) Degree in relevant subject area or other relevant professional qualifications
  • Teaching qualification (PGCE / PGCHE)
  • A good knowledge of the HE Sector including BTEC HNC/D requirements
  • Experience of managing an academic team in higher education
  • Experience of working in partnerships with universities
  • Other industry-related professional accreditations/certifications/memberships
